Already confirmed as an exec producer on “Diary of a Female President,” “Jane the Virgin” breakout Gina Rodriguez has now signed on to recur and direct the pilot of the Disney+ series. Deadline confirmed the news.
Penned by series creator Ilana Peña (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”), “Diary of a Female President” tells the story of Elena (Tess Romero), a “semi-dweeby” 12-year-old Cuban-American girl dealing with the lows and highs of middle school on her journey towards becoming the future president of the United States. Rodriguez will play the grown-up version of the protagonist — a politician on the campaign trail.
Robin Shorr (“The Middle”) is serving as showrunner on the half-hour comedy and joins Rodriguez, Peña, and Emily Gipson as an exec producer.
“I established my production company as a vehicle to tell stories for and by the underrepresented,” said Rodriguez. “Bringing this story to Disney+ is a dream come true not to mention hope for our future.”
Rodriguez’s big screen credits include sci-fi “Annihilation,” Jennifer Kaytin Robinson rom-com “Someone Great,” and Catherine Hardwicke crime thriller “Miss Bala.” She won a Golden Globe for her leading role in “Jane the Virgin.” The CW telenovela is currently winding down its fifth and final season. She’s helmed three episodes of the critically acclaimed series about a sexually inexperienced woman who’s unintentionally inseminated at the hospital. Rodriguez has also directed an episode of “Charmed.”
