Gina Rodriguez to Star in and Produce Netflix Rom-Com from Jennifer Kaytin Robinson

Rodriguez in “Jane the Virgin”: The CW

Gina Rodriguez is adding another Netflix project to her slate. The “Jane the Virgin” star has signed on to topline and exec produce “Someone Great” for the streamer, The Hollywood Reporter confirms. The romantic comedy marks “Sweet/Vicious” creator Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s directorial debut. Rodriguez is voicing Carmen Sandiego in Netflix’s upcoming reboot of the series about a globe-trotting criminal.

Penned by Robinson, “Someone Great” centers on a woman dealing with the aftermath of a heart-wrenching breakup. She decides to head to New York City for a trip with her two BFFs before she moves across the country for a new job.

Described as being “about loss, growing up, and above all the everlasting bond of female friendships,” the film will likely kick off production in April.

Rodriguez is producing via her shingle I Can and I Will Productions. “Spy” helmer Paul Feig is also among the project’s producers.

In 2015 Rodriguez won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of a virgin who is impregnated when a doctor accidentally artificially inseminates her in “Jane the Virgin.” The CW telenovela is currently in its fourth season. She can also be seen in “Annihilation,” in theaters now. The sci-fi sees her teaming up with Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, and Jennifer Jason Leigh on a mysterious expedition.
