Gina Torres is getting her own show. The “Suits” star will topline ABC’s soapy drama pilot “The Death of Sofia Valdez.”
Torres plays the titular character, an immigrant who is, on the surface, living the American dream. The wealthy entrepreneur and supporter of immigrant rights came from an impoverished background and worked her way up. Sofia’s determination to continue her rapid ascent is alienating those around her. And she’s already paid a hefty price to follow her dreams — one she may not be able to keep secret for much longer. It sounds like it took more than a strong work ethic for Sofia to get to the top.
The series is described as “Macbeth” with a Cuban twist.
Torres’s costars on the project include Marta Milans (“Killer Women”), Zabryna Guevara (“Gotham”), Alison Fernandez (“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”) and Christina Pickles (“Friends”).
The pilot for “The Death of Sofia Valdez” was penned by writer-playwright-actress Charise Castro Smith (“Devious Maids”) who will executive produce alongside “Marvel’s Agent Carter” showrunners and exec producers Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters. Fazekas and Butters met as assistants on “The X-Files” and later created The CW’s cult hit “Reaper.” The pair received two WGA nominations for their work on “Law & Order: SVU.”
The Hollywood Reporter specifies that the pilot “is in second position” to “Suits,” which has been confirmed for a sixth season later in 2016, with Torres inked in as a series regular.
