Gitanjali Rao’s Hand-Painted Animated Pic “Bombay Rose” Goes to Netflix

"Bombay Rose"

Gitanjali Rao’s feature debut has secured distribution. Deadline reports that Netflix snagged rights to “Bombay Rose,” which made history as the first animated pic to open Venice Critics Week.

Set on the streets of Mumbai, “Bombay Rose” is a musical romance that tells the story of Kamala (Cyli Khare) and Salim’s (Amit Deondi) quest for love using hand-painted animation. “A red rose brings together three tales of impossible loves: Love between a Hindu girl and a Muslim boy, love between two women, and love of an entire city for its Bollywood stars,” the source hints.

Rao told us that she hopes the film encourages audiences to think about “how love — not violence, not discrimination, not exclusion, not obsession — is the way for us to be happy. To live and let love.”

“Bombay Rose” will be released globally, excluding China, later this year, and in France in 2021. Rao penned the script for the pic and edited it. Her short “Printed Rainbow” was shortlisted for the Oscar in 2008.
