Glenda Jackson Getting a BFI Retrospective This July

Jackson: BBC

Glenda Jackson will soon be able to add “BFI Retrospective” to her long list of accomplishments. Some of the Oscar-, BAFTA-, Tony-, and Emmy-winning actress’ most renowned films and television projects will screen as a series at London’s BFI Southbank, a press release announced. “Glenda Jackson: The Art of Conviction” will be held July 2-31.

Titles will include features “Women in Love,” “A Touch of Class,” “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” and “Hedda.” Jackson received Oscars for her performances in the former two, and nominations for the latter pair. “Elizabeth R,” the BBC miniseries about Elizabeth I that landed Jackson two Emmys, is also on the program, as is 1971’s “Mary, Queen of Scots,” in which the actress again portrayed Elizabeth Tudor. “The Art of Conviction” will also count “The Rainbow,” “The Maids,” “Stevie,” “Turtle Diary,” and “The Romantic Englishwoman” among its highlights.

An MP from 1992-2015, “Glenda Jackson’s political convictions undoubtedly attracted her to the subject matter of ‘Giro City’ (Karl Francis, 1982), about a group of Welsh investigative journalists covering the Troubles in Northern Ireland, who unearth censorship and corruption back home,” the source observes. “Always fully engaged with the issues of the world around her, and seeking political solutions to them, Jackson appeared on many current-affairs and talk shows over the years, a compilation of which will screen alongside ‘Giro City’; ‘Glenda Jackson and Politics’ will provide an insight into the issues that matter the most to her.”

Jackson herself will participate in the retrospective with the event “Glenda Jackson in Conversation” on July 5. The talk will offer audiences “with a unique opportunity to hear from one of the greatest actors of our time, who has a track record of choosing roles that are centered on independence and conviction, and whose talent and intensity have burned through big and small screen alike.”

Jackson’s more recent work includes portraying the titular character in Broadway’s “King Lear” and BBC miniseries “Elizabeth Is Missing,” which will screen as part of “The Art of Conviction.”
