Glenn Close Books a Movie and a Broadway Show

Big news day for Glenn Close, who will be returning to Broadway and the silver screen.

Close’s most recent appearance on Broadway was in Sunset Boulevard back in 1994. Her portrayal of Norma Desmond earned her a Tony — her third. Close previously won for her performances in Death and the Maiden (1992) and The Real Thing (1984). After a 20 year hiatus, Close is returning to Broadway in a limited 18 week-run of Edward Albee’s A Delicate Balance, a Pulitzer Prize winning play.

Here’s what you can expect:

“The play sees 67-year-old Close and [John] Lithgow, 68, as a married couple coping with the return of their 36-year-old daughter after her fourth marriage break-up, alongside a visit from Close’s alcoholic sister and two family friends.”

Lindsay Duncan (a two-time Tony-winner for Private Lives and Les Liaisons Dangereuses) will appear as Close’s sister and Martha Plimpton (The Good Wife, Raising Hope) will play Close and Lithgow’s daughter.

Close’s new film, The Wife, will also focus on a couple forced to deal with the past: according to The Hollywood Reporter, “The story is set in the literary world as a faithful wife of a famous and philandering New York novelist decides to leave her husband on the eve of his receiving a major book award in Stockholm. That uncoupling prompts a re-examination of the relationship as secrets are revealed.”

The Wife is based on a novel by Meg Wolitzer and adapted for the screen by Jane Anderson, an Emmy Award winning writer and director who most recently worked as a consulting producer for Mad Men. The film has been “in the works” for over a decade, and Anderson was originally slated to direct; Swedish director Bjorn Runge will now direct the project. The Wife will be shot in both English and Swedish, and will shoot primarily in Stockholm.

Here’s what Meg Wolitzer has to say about the film:

I feel thrilled and honored to have such extremely talented people involved with the film version of The Wife, a novel that I loved writing.
