Recent Golden Globe winner Glenn Close earned a standing ovation at the ceremony for her rousing acceptance speech encouraging women to seek personal fulfillment. Since then, “The Wife” star took home a Critics Choice Award for her leading role in the drama and used her time at the podium to discuss how women are often pitted against one another in the industry. A favorite in the Oscar race, we may see Close accepting Best Actress at the Academy Awards, set to be held February 24. But we won’t have to wait that long to hear her deliver another amazing speech. She’ll be honored by the US-Ireland Alliance at the 14th Annual Oscar Wilde Awards on February 21 in Santa Monica, a press release announced.
Melissa McCarthy, who took home an Oscar Wilde Award in 2012, will present Close with the award.
A six-time Oscar nominee, Close has been recognized for her work in “Albert Nobbs,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “Fatal Attraction,” “The Natural,” “The Big Chill,” and “The World According to Garp.” She received two Emmys for her role in FX legal thriller “Damages,” and another for TV movie “Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story.”
“The Wife” is based on Meg Wolitzer’s novel of the same name and tells the story of a woman who has dedicated her life to supporting her husband and his career as a successful author. Just as he’s about to receive the Nobel Prize, she begins to reevaluate their relationship.
Oscar nominations will be announced January 22. McCarthy is also considered a front runner to score a nod for her role as literary forger Lee Israel in Marielle Heller’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”
Previous recipients of the Oscar Wilde Awards include Saoirse Ronan, Michelle Williams, and Ruth Negga.
