Greta Gerwig and Julie Delpy to Star in Todd Solondz’s ‘Welcome to the Dollhouse’ Sequel(-ish) Project

Some exciting news for those among us who are fans of very, very dark comedy: Todd Solondz is kinda-sorta making a sequel to his painfully funny and disturbing 1995 cult classic Welcome to the Dollhouse. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Solondz is in the midst of assembling a cast for Wiener-Dog, “an ensemble indie that is tied together thematically by a dachshund. But one of the stories also will center on Dawn Wiener, the character mercilessly teased as ‘Weiner Dog’ in the [original film.]”

Greta Gerwig and Julie Delpy, both of whom are great actresses and writers (Delpy also directs, making her a triple threat), are currently in discussions to star. Gerwig’s role would be the grown-up version of Dawn Wiener (which Heather Matarazzo played in Welcome to the Dollhouse), while Delpy’s hypothetical character is unknown.

If you’re wondering why the Internet hadn’t caught word of this project earlier: Solondz “had been developing quietly under the radar but now has a new leash on life: Megan Ellison and her Annapurna production shingle have come on board to produce and finance with Christine Vachon and her banner Killer Films also on board to produce.” Megan Ellison — giving life to yet another interesting indie.

While we were disappointed for Gerwig when CBS opted not to go forward with How I Met Your Dad, the bright side is that the Frances Ha star is now free to act in lots of movies, which will allow us to see the talented actress play a variety of roles and hopefully give her some time to write another script. She had a small role in Mia Hansen-Løve’s Eden and will next be seen opposite Al Pacino in The Humbling, out January 2015.
