Greta Gerwig to Co-Write and Possibly Direct “Barbie” Film Starring Margot Robbie

Greta Gerwig will re-imagine the world’s most iconic doll. The Oscar-nominated “Lady Bird” writer-director is signed on to co-write Warner Bros.’ live-action “Barbie” with frequent collaborator and partner Noah Baumbach. She’s also “being eyed to direct, though no deal has yet closed,” Variety reports.

“I, Tonya’s” Margot Robbie is on board to play the Mattel toy and exec produce the feature via her production banner, LuckyChap. Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway were previously linked to “Barbie.”

Gerwig’s follow-up to “Lady Bird,” “Little Women,” is slated to hit theaters December 25. The period drama tells the story of four sisters coming of age. Emma Watson, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, and Meryl Streep star in the Louisa May Alcott adaptation.

“Make the film,” Gerwig urged when we asked her advice for other women directors. “Just start the steps to make it. One foot in front of the other. Because we need your films. I need your films.” The “Frances Ha” co-writer and star added, “More practically, I think a lot of women wait for permission. I used to do that. I still do that. I think it’s the curse of being the ‘good student’ — never wanting to get out of line or be disruptive or deviate from the assignment. But making art? There is no assignment, there is no teacher — you must give yourself sovereignty. Never wait for permission. No one will ever give it to you.”

Gerwig received a Best Director Oscar nomination for “Lady Bird,” making her the fifth woman ever recognized in the category.
