We’re going to be seeing more from Jenifer Rice-Genzuk Henry. As Deadline reports, the “Grown-ish” executive producer has inked an overall deal with ABC Studios. The pact will see Henry developing new series while maintaining her “Grown-ish” gig.
She will collaborate with her mother, veteran TV writer-producer Al Sonja L. Rice (“In Living Color”), on one of her first new projects. The duo will delve into Henry’s specific racial identity and background — she’s Black and Jewish — and “the unique mother-daughter relationship that included Rice teaching Henry to write for TV.”
A spinoff of ABC’s”Black-ish,” Freeform comedy “Grown-ish” follows “Black-ish” character Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) as she leaves home and begins the next phase of her life: college. It is produced by ABC Signature, the cable/streaming division of ABC Studios. “Grown-ish” premiered in January and its second season is expected early in 2019.
Henry has penned several episodes of “Grown-ish.” Previously, she wrote for and produced “Black-ish,” and “The Game.” She’s also “written on multiple studio features including the upcoming ‘Cheaper By the Dozen’ remake for Fox,” Deadline notes.
Before her TV career Henry was Jeni G. of R&B/pop group Before Dark. The “Monica” artists toured with Destiny’s Child and Christina Aguilera.
