“Guardians of the Galaxy” Writer Nicole Perlman Signs on to Amazon’s “True Skin”

Nicole Perlman has landed another major gig. The “Guardians of the Galaxy” co-writer will pen “True Skin,” a new sci-fi drama series from Amazon Studios. The project originated as a short film that went viral. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. planned to adapt the short into a feature, but the rights lapsed and Amazon scooped them up.

The short, THR writes, “is set in the not-too-distant future where everyone is augmenting their bodies. The story’s hero can’t afford to augment in the U.S., so he heads to the black market of Bangkok, where he gets hold of a mysterious chip that he discovers is slowly turning him robotic — and is a hot commodity wanted by shadowy forces.”

Stephan Zlotescu, the short’s creator, will direct. Perlman will serve as one of the series’ executive producers. Work on “True Skin” isn’t expected to kick off until 2017.

Perlman and Meg LeFauve (“Inside Out”) are writing the script for the hotly anticipated “Captain Marvel” film starring Oscar winner Brie Larson. Perlman has a number of other projects in the works as well, including penning the script for “Detective Pikachu,” Universal and Legendary’s Pokémon movie.

“Guardians of the Galaxy” was the third-highest grossing movie internationally in 2014. The ragtag group of unlikely heroes saved the day and dominated the box office: The film made more than $773 million on a budget of $170 million.
