2019 is shaping up to be a big year for Gurinder Chadha. Her latest film, “Blinded by the Light,” scored the biggest deal at Sundance and will open August 14, and “Beecham House,” her TV series about the residents and servants of a 19th century Delhi mansion, will make its U.S. debut on PBS later this year. Now there’s word that the “Bend It Like Beckham” director is adapting Nidhi Chanani’s graphic novel “Pashmina” into an animated musical for Netflix. The coming-of-age story follows a first-generation Indian American and the adventures she goes on thanks to her magical pashmina.
Chadha will collaborate with her husband and frequent co-writer Paul Mayeda Berges and producer Ashok Amritraj on the project, a press release announced.
Illustrated and written by Chanani, “Pashmina” sees protagonist Priyanka traveling through her family’s history in India with the help of her pashmina’s powers. The story has been celebrated for its feminist themes and its depiction of Indian culture.
“When our hero, Priyanka, puts on the magical pashmina for the first time and is transported to the India of her dreams, that’s when the fun, the magic, the song, and the dancing really come to life!” Chadha described.
“Gurinder, Paul, and Ashok together form a cinematic dream team and we’re beyond thrilled to work with them to bring to life the beautiful story of ‘Pashmina’ — with its universal themes of family, female empowerment, and identity,” said Melissa Cobb, vp of kids & family at Netflix. “’Pashmina’ connects three generations of women across two continents in a timely story that we hope will resonate with family audiences around the world on Netflix.”
Chadha’s Bend It Films are among “Pashmina’s” producers. Chanani is set to exec produce.
Based on Sarfraz Manzoor’s memoir “Greetings from Bury Park,” Chadha’s 1987-set “Blinded by the Light” centers on a 16-year-old British-Pakistani boy and his love of Bruce Springsteen music. Her previous credits include “Viceroy’s House,” “Bride & Prejudice,” and “Bhaji on the Beach.”
