Gwyneth Hughes Working on a Small Screen Adaptation of “Anna Karenina”

Another adaptation of Anna Karenina’s tragic tale is on the way. Gwyneth Hughes is in the early stages of developing a small-screen remake of Leo Tolstoy’s classic 19th-century novel with British producer Expectation. Deadline broke the news.

Widely considered one of the greatest works of literature ever written, “Anna Karenina” is told in eight parts and centers on its eponymous character’s extramarital affair with a cavalry officer and the ensuing scandal.

Keira Knightley re-teamed with her “Atonement” director Joe Wright to play the iconic character in 2012’s “Anna Karenina.” Helen McCrory played the role in PBS and Channel 4’s 2000 adaptation of the novel.

Hughes recently adapted another beloved novel, “Vanity Fair,” for a seven-part ITV and Amazon series led by Olivia Cooke. She has Keeley Hawes-starrer “Honour” in the works. Based on a true story, the two-parter tells centers on Caroline Goode, the detective who led the investigation into Banaz Mahmod’s honour-killing. The 20-year-old Londoner was murdered by her family when she found new love after leaving the physically and sexually abusive man she was forced to marry.
