Hailee Steinfeld to Play Carrie Pilby in YA Adaptation

Oscar-nominated teenage actress Hailee Steinfeld will join Jennifer Lawrence, Shailene Woodley, and Chloe Grace Moretz in laying claim to a popular YA adaptation of her own.

Steinfeld will star as the titular character of the 2003 novel Carrie Pilby, which centers on a 19-year-old wunderkind who has just graduated from Harvard and isn’t sure what to do with her life. Written by Caren Lissner, the coming-of-age novel finds Carrie attempting new things and searching for her place in a scary world with the aid of her therapist.

To be directed by first-timer Susan Johnson and written by Kara Holden, Carrie Pilby will be that rarity: a film written and directed by women, starring a woman, based on source material by a woman. It will be produced by two female producers as well: Suzanne Farwell and Susan Cartsonis.

Steinfeld has a busy slate coming up: in addition to the Elizabeth Banks-helmed Pitch Perfect 2, she’ll co-star in the action-comedy Barely Lethal and the action-thriller Term Life.
