HBO Max’s untitled Jean Smart comedy has found its co-lead. A press release announced that Hannah Einbinder, best known for her work as a stand-up comedian, will play Smart’s protegee in the series hailing from “Broad City” alumnae.

The project “explores a dark mentorship that forms between Deborah Vance (Smart), a legendary Las Vegas comedian, and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old (Einbinder),” according to its logline.

Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky created the series. The former two are frequent collaborators, and have worked together on “Broad City,” “Time Traveling Bong,” and “Rough Night.” Aniello most recently exec produced and directed Netflix’s critically acclaimed “Baby-Sitters Club” reboot. Statsky also worked on “Broad City.” Her other credits include “The Good Place” and “Parks and Recreation.”

Smart is a three-time Emmy winner. She took home honors for her work in “Frasier” and “Samantha Who?” “Watchmen,” “Legion,” and “Dirty John” are among her recent credits. She’s set to star in “Miss Macy,” a drama about a girl with an unhappy home life who finds mentorship from an eccentric woman.

Einbinder was named Just For Laugh’s 2019 New Face of Comedy. Check out a clip of the comic making her network TV debut on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” below.
