Hannah Rosenzweig and Wendy Sachs’ “Surge” Will Premiere on Showtime’s SHOxBET Channel

Another documentary centering women in politics is on the way. On the heels of Hillary Bachelder’s “Represent” opening and the trailer for Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés’ “All In: The Fight for Democracy” launching, Hannah Rosenzweig and Wendy Sachs’ “Surge” has been acquired. The documentary, about three women who entered the history-making 2018 midterm elections, will premiere on Showtime’s new multiplex channel SHOxBET on September 8 at 9 p.m. EST. A press release announced the news.

In fall 2018, a record number of first-time female candidates ran for and won political office. “Surge” follows three of them, including Lauren Underwood, the youngest Black woman ever to be elected to Congress, during their campaigns. A registered nurse and public health expert, Underwood is now at the forefront of the COVID-19 fight and the movement for racial justice. She’s also facing a tough road to re-election this November.

“With the historic nomination of a Black female vice presidential candidate and with more women running for office in 2020 than ever before in America’s history, it’s clear that the surge has continued,” Rosenzweig and Sachs told Deadline, referring to Kamala Harris joining Joe Biden’s ticket. “Our film is more timely than ever because it’s not just about women running for office, but about women getting behind women running for office and how critical it is to turn out the female vote.”

Alyssa Milano and Regina K. Scully are among “Surge’s” executive producers, and Katie Couric advised on the doc and backed it financially.
