Lauren Graham has starred in two of the most beloved television series since the new millennium: the WB’s cult classic “Gilmore Girls” and NBC’s critically acclaimed “Parenthood.” Both shows have famously dedicated fanbases, so it comes as no surprise that a reunion between Graham and each of her onscreen daughters has people freaking out. “Gilmore Girls” fans’ wildest dreams came true yesterday when it was revealed that Lorelai (Graham) and Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) would resume their lively, ever-quotable banter in a limited-series revival on Netflix. Earlier in the day, it was reported that Graham would be re-teaming with her “Parenthood” daughter Mae Whitman (“The Duff”), though not in the “Parenthood” universe: The two are set to adapt the novel “The Royal We” for CBS Films.
TVLine reports that the “Gilmore Girls” cast is still in negotiations — in fact, only in the beginning stages of them — but Graham and Bledel are likely to be joined by Kelly Bishop, who played Emily Gilmore, and Scott Patterson, Lorelai’s ever-complicated love interest Luke. The show originally ran from 2000–2007.
Fans can also breathe a deep sigh of relief thanks to the participation of the real leading lady of the series, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, who wasn’t involved in the show’s final season due to contract drama with Warner Bros. but will work on the revival. (It’s generally agreed upon that Sherman-Palladino’s departure led to a serious decline in the quality of the series.) Sherman-Palladino is an advocate for women directors, so hopefully we can see some female helmers behind the four 90-minute episodes/mini-movies.
Graham will be making her own mark behind the scenes by penning the script for “The Royal We,” with Whitman likely to star. The two certainly didn’t waste much time setting up the chance to work together again: “Parenthood” ended just this year after six seasons on the air. Both will produce the project, which doesn’t have a director attached yet. “The Royal We” follows an American woman who crosses the pond to attend Oxford, where she meets and falls in love with a fellow pupil: the future King of England.
