Mere days after the announcement that abolitionist Harriet Tubman would make her way to American currency, it’s also been announced that a biopic about her is in the works as well, Deadline has reported.
Tubman was born into slavery, escaped in 1849, and participated in the Underground Railroad, saving 70 slaves on 13 missions. She then worked as a scout and spy for the North during the Civil War. She was a strong supporter of women’s suffrage.
Tubman has been portrayed in entertainment before. In 1978, Cicely Tyson played her in the TV miniseries “A Woman Called Moses,” which was based on the novel by Marcy Heidish. Viola Davis is also developing a Tubman project based on the Kate Clifford Larson book “Bound for the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman: Portrait of an American Hero” for HBO.
The producing team features a number of women. Producers for the project include Debra Martin Chase (“The Princess Diaries”), “Beasts of No Nation” producer Daniela Taplin Lundberg, and Macro’s production president Kim Roth.
The project has a working title of “Harriet” and will be directed by “Homeland” director Seith Mann.
