Lyla Lee’s YA novel “I’ll Be the One” hasn’t hit shelves yet, but Hollywood seems certain that the story about an aspiring K-Pop star will strike a chord with readers — and viewers. HBO Max beat over five other bidders to secure rights to adapt the book into a feature film, Deadline reports. The streamer is teaming up with Anonymous Content on the project.
“Always Be My Maybe” helmer and “Fresh Off the Boat” creator Nahnatchka Khan is “attached to produce and eyeing to direct [via] her Fierce Baby Productions,” according to the source. Fierce Baby’s Chloe Yellin and Anonymous Content’s Joy Gorman Wettels are also set to produce.
Set to be penned by Emmy-nominated Korean-American writer Colleen McGuinness, the film adaptation of “I’ll Be the One” tells the story of “16-year-old Skye Shin — a bi-sexual, Korean-American girl — as she pursues her dreams as a participant on reality TV singing and dancing competition ‘K-Pop Shining Star,'” Deadline summarizes. ” With the help of her new friends and her crush, world famous model Henry Cho, Skye faces the industry’s old-fashioned beauty standards head on, setting her sights on becoming a K-pop star – one the world has never seen before.”
“Forever,” “Friends from College,” and “30 Rock” are among McGuinness’ writing credits.
Lee’s book will be published by the HarperCollins imprint Katherine Tegen Books this summer.
“I’ll Be the One” is the latest in a slew of K-pop themed projects on the way. “Seoul Girls,” an upcoming Rebel Wilson-penned Lionsgate comedy, centers on a Korean-American girl who enters a worldwide talent competition to be the opening act for the world’s biggest K-pop boy band, and “Olympic Boulevard,” Paula Yoo’s drama series about a disgraced Korean American former K-Pop star, is in development at NBCUniversal’s Peacock.
