Helen Mirren Adds “Fast and Furious 8” to Her Eclectic Career

“Eye in the Sky”

Dame Helen Mirren is about to drive a suped-up race car. The prestigious actress has confirmed that she’s signed on to appear in “Fast and Furious 8.”

In an interview with Elle Magazine, Mirren explained that she likes to divide her time equally between film and theater, “but film is particularly relevant. I like it to be serious. Of course, having said that I’m about to do ‘Fast and Furious 8.’ But that’s for the fun of it. So maybe that’s what I want as well, some fun and some relevant, serious, important movies.”

Mirren confirmed to the magazine that she’s set to appear in the film, along with Charlize Theron, who is also new to the franchise, and staples like Vin Diesel and Jordana Brewster. But Mirren isn’t about to stick to the sidelines. She wants a car. “I’ve always rather loved driving. I said, ‘I’ll be in it, but only if I’m allowed to drive if I do drive in it.’ But we’ll see. We’ll see how it transpires,” she told Elle.

This is just another peg in Mirren’s eclectic career, which has seen her play The Queen of England in “The Queen,” an assassin in “RED,” a Shakespeare character in “The Tempest,” a spy in “The Debt,” and most recently a military drone strike operator in “Eye in the Sky.”

Mirren noted that her role in “Eye in the Sky” was originally written for a man, but that, “in terms of the drone pilots, a lot of them are women. Women are very good at that because their fingers move fast and they have quick reactions. So a lot of the drone pilots actually are women–I don’t what percentage. It’s only comparatively recently that women have been allowed to fight on the front lines.”

Now that Mirren has conquered warfare, she’s ready to conquer the road. Fast and Furious 8" is set for an April, 2017 release.
