The Berlin Film Festival is set to celebrate Helen Mirren. The Oscar winner will be honored with a Golden Bear for lifetime achievement at the fest’s 2020 edition. The Berlinale will also pay tribute to the “Catherine the Great” star by screening some of her best-known films, including “The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover,” “The Good Liar,” and “The Last Station.” Variety confirmed the news.
Charlotte Rampling, Milena Canonero, and Meryl Streep are among the previous recipients of the Golden Bear for lifetime achievement.
“Helen Mirren is a strong personality whose powerful portrayals are always impressive,” said Mariette Rissenbeek, the Berlinale’s new executive director. “She surprises us time and again with her interpretation of complex characters. Whether it’s Chris in ‘Calendar Girls’ or Queen Elizabeth II in ‘The Queen,’ her portrayals are a paradigm of strong women, and it is our great pleasure to award her the Honorary Golden Bear for her lifetime achievement.”
A four-time Oscar nominee, Mirren took home the prize for her role in “The Queen.” She also received nods for “The Last Station,” “Gosford Park,” and “The Madness of King George.” Mirren has also been recognized for her work on the stage: she snagged a Tony and Olivier Award for her work in “The Audience.”
“Women have got to stop being so polite,” Mirren has said. “If I ever had children, which I don’t, the first thing I’d teach I’d teach a girl of mine is the words ‘fuck off.'”
You can catch Mirren in theaters now in crime thriller “The Good Liar.” “Catherine the Great,” “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” and “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” are among her other recent credits.
