Helen Mirren’s returning to public office. In 2007 the actress took home an Oscar for portraying Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen.” In 2020 she received a Golden Globe nod for playing Russia’s longest-ruling female leader in HBO’s “Catherine the Great.” Now she’s set to topline a biopic of Golda Meir, Israel’s first and only female prime minister. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.

Set during the Yom Kippur War, “Golda” will “focus on the 1973 conflict, when Egypt, Syria, and Jordan launched a surprise attack on Israel to reclaim territory lost during the Six-Day War in 1967, and the decisions made by Meir amid infighting from her all-male cabinet,” THR details.

“As someone who was born during the Yom Kippur War, I am honored to tell this fascinating story about the first and only woman to ever lead Israel,” said Guy Nattiv (“Skin”), who is signed on to direct the film. “Nicholas Martin’s brilliant script dives into Golda’s final chapter as the country faces a deadly surprise attack during the holiest day of the year, a core of delusional generals undermining Golda’s judgment, all the while undergoing secret treatments for her illness. I could not be more excited to work with the legendary Miss Mirren to bring this epic, emotional, and complex story to life.”

Meir died in 1974.

A four-time Oscar nominee, Mirren also landed nods for “The Last Station,” “Gosford Park,” and “The Madness of King George.” “The Good Liar,” “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” and “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” are among her more recent credits.
