Hey Netflix, Where’s ‘Jessica Jones’s’ Season 2 Renewal?

null"Marvel’s Jessica Jones" has appeared on numerous best-of-TV lists (including ours) and is being pirated like crazy, according to a new podcast interview with showrunner Melissa Rosenberg.

But critical acclaim and mass popularity apparently aren’t enough for Netflix to renew "Jessica Jones" yet. Asked by "The Spin-off" host Michael Schneider what’s the latest update on the superhero series’ return, Rosenberg said the question of a second season was still up in the air:

Rosenberg: I don’t really have any information for you. It’s really been focusing on this season. I think everyone involved is feeling, like, we can drop the mike and walk out. The response has been so incredible. But obviously we all want to continue to tell stories for her. There’s a lot of logistical questions that people are having conversations about. As far as i’m aware of, I’m just really focused on what we’ve done and this incredible response.

It’s hard to believe that Netflix wouldn’t give "Jessica Jones" a second season. The drama isn’t just the best female-superhero tale we’ve seen so far, but has expanded non-comics readers’ ideas about what the super-powered genre can talk about and be about.

Sure, it’s only been a month since "Jessica Jones" debuted. But the streaming site is known to give two seasons apiece to certain shows, like "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," which received a second season as part of its sale to Netflix from NBC, and "Grace and Frankie," which just received a Season 3 order months before Season 2 would be scheduled to debut. And yes, there’s been discussion of combining Netflix’s four Marvel series — about Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Daredevil and Iron Fist — into a fifth show called "The Defenders." But "Marvel’s Daredevil" was renewed just eleven days after its premiere on Netflix.

So what’s the dang hold-up, Netflix?

Given the TV and film industries’ continued gender imbalance, we need "Jessica" way more than "The Defenders" does. Please, Netflix, give us a holiday surprise by renewing "Jessica Jones" soon.
