Hollywood Feminist of the Day: Garry Trudeau

A big shout out to the funny guys on TV like John Stewart and Stephen Colbert — who are standing up for women’s rights during this absurd period where the right wing thinks its possible to push back the clock and take away our rights.

Now, comic strip writer Garry Trudeau has joined the fray with his Doonesbury comic strip this week targeting the absurd laws requiring women to undergo ultrasounds before having abortions.

Here’s some of what Trudeau said in an email to The Guardian:

Ninety-nine percent of American women have or will use contraception during their lifetimes. To see these healthcare rights systematically undermined in state after state by the party of ‘limited government’ is appalling. “In Texas, the sonograms are the least of it. The legislature has also defunded women’s health clinics all over the state, leaving 300,000 women without the contraceptive services that prevent abortions in the first place. Insanity.

Some papers like the LA Times are moving the strip to the op-ed page from the comics page cause they say it is “a little over the top”, and some are not running the strip at all including the Portland Oregonian. Doonesbury runs in about 1,400 papers.
