After the KONY 2012 video went viral this past spring and its subsequent fallout, much of the celebrity community has quieted down about human trafficking and modern slavery. But the video inspired, Willow Smith, daughter of Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, to start researching human trafficking and sex slavery.
Yesterday, in front of Congress, Jada Pinkett Smith cited her daughter as the one who informed her about the horrors of human trafficking. In response, Pinkett-Smith will be launching a campaign to increase awareness and take action.
Accompanied by Willow and husband, Will Smith, Pinkett Smith spoke with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee during a hearing and discussed what strategies need to be used to combat trafficking throughout the next decade. Pinkett Smith told the committee that action must be increased in order to decrease trafficking in the U.S. and abroad. She said that human trafficking “robs us of the thing we value most, our freedom.”
It’s always encouraging to see celebrities use their influence to work on changing things. And it’s especially encouraging to see Willow Smith’s emerging feminist politics educate and inspire her mother to take action for a cause that is important to both of them.
