The 28th annual Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival (HSDFF) is currently underway, and according to the fest, over 50 percent of the program hails from women filmmakers, and 25 percent of the titles are by filmmakers of color.

“Flannery’s” world premiere kicked off the fest. Directed by Elizabeth Coffman and Mark Bosco, the doc pays homage to Southern literary icon Flannery O’Connor, whose best known works include short story collections “A Good Man Is Hard to Find and Other Stories” and “Everything That Rises Must Converge.”

Serving as this year’s Centerpiece Film is Molly Stuart’s “Objector,” a portrait of 19-year-old Israeli Atalya Ben-Abba, who refuses conscription and becomes an accidental activist.

Other women-directed offerings include “Made in Boise,” Beth Aala’s look into the business of surrogacy in Boise, Idaho, and Deia Schlosberg’s “The Story of Plastic,” an investigation into how scientists and activists are taking on corporations pushing single-use plastic consumerism.

“I am so excited and proud to be part of this fantastic festival of non-fiction films and real stories,” said Diane Ladd, who is serving as this year’s HSDFF Honorary Chairperson. “I am a huge fan of documentary films, as these are the last bastion of truth telling art. This year’s line up is incredible and this festival, organized by some amazing female filmmakers, is inspiring and impressive. I look forward to meeting the filmmakers and the audience, as we take in some of this year’s best films and are introduced to the world premieres from some great new artists.”

HSDFF takes place in Hot Springs, AR. The fest started October 18 and runs until the 26. Check out the complete lineup over at HSDFF’s website.
