Hungary Chooses Ildikó Enyedi’s “On Body and Soul” as Foreign-Language Oscar Pick

“On Body and Soul”

Ildikó Enyedi’s “On Body and Soul” took home top honors at the Berlin Film Festival in February, and it could land an Oscar nomination in the coming months. The unconventional romantic drama has been named as Hungary’s submission for the foreign-language category at the 2018 Academy Awards, Deadline reports.

Set in a Budapest slaughterhouse, “On Body and Soul” centers on two employees who form a special connection. It’ll screen at the Toronto International Film Festival this month.

Enyedi’s first feature, “My Twentieth Century,” won Cannes’ Camera d’Or in 1989. Her other credits include “Tamas and Juli,” “Simon Magus,” and the series “Terápia,” the Hungarian version of HBO’s “In Treatment.”

Other women-directed films in the foreign-language race include Petra Volpe’s women’s rights drama “The Divine Order,” Ana Urushadze’s psychological thriller “Scary Mother,” and Annemarie Jacir’s “Wajib,” a dramedy about a father and his estranged son.
