“Hunting Ground” Filmmakers to Tackle Hollywood Sexual Assault in Next Doc

Producer Amy Ziering: Broadly/YouTube

Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick’s documentaries have explored sexual assault in college campuses and the U.S. military, and now they’re turning their camera on the film industry itself. The frequent collaborators are set to work on a project about predators in Hollywood, a press release has announced.

While the doc couldn’t be more timely, Ziering revealed that they’ve been developing the film for some time, but found themselves “grappling with the same forces that had kept this story silenced for so long. Everyone was frightened about what would happen to their careers, and worried about whether they would be sued,” she explained. “Distributors were unwilling to fund or release the film, and few people were willing to talk on the record.” That all changed in recent weeks, when dozens of women came forward alleging that Harvey Weinstein harassed and assaulted them. When these stories broke, it was “like an invisible dam collapsed,” Ziering said.

Impact Partners is now on board to finance.

“Documentaries, more than any other medium, bring an intensely moving investigative lens to controversial subject matter,” Dick commented. “What our film will capture, especially at this pivotal turning point in Hollywood history, is the underlying current of abuse and manipulation at the hands of power. Our film will also underscore the courage it takes to come forward and be a catalyst for change.”

Ziering and Dick’s last joint effort, 2015’s “The Hunting Ground,” was distributed by The Weinstein Co.’s Radius division. The doc addresses the ubiquity of sexual assault on U.S. campuses and the rape culture within those institutions that denies survivors justice. The pair is also behind Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning “The Invisible War,” an incisive look at the prevalence of sexual assault in the U.S. military and the lack of an impartial justice system addressing these crimes.

Amy Berg’s 2015 doc “An Open Secret” explored Hollywood’s long and sordid history of sexually abusing its most vulnerable performers: child actors.
