The International Documentary Association (IDA) has announced shortlists for the Best Feature and Best Short categories at the 36th Annual IDA Documentary Awards, which will be presented at a virtual ceremony in 2021.
Thirty-eight percent of directors in the running for Best Feature are women. Titles include Garrett Bradley’s “Time,” a portrait of a modern-day abolitionist, and Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss’ “Boys State,” a look inside an American Legion-sponsored program that sees a thousand Texas high school seniors gathering for a week-long program to build their own state government. Thirty features appear on the shortlist: 30 percent of directors identify as BIPOC and eight percent are LGBTQ.
Kate Novack’s “Hysterical Girl” and Kira Dane and Katelyn Rebelo’s “Mizuko” are among the 15 titles to make the cut in the Best Short category. The former reexamines Sigmund Freud’s famous case study of “Dora,” and the latter explores a Japanese-American woman’s connection to a Buddhist ritual for grieving abortions. Fifty-eight percent of directors on the short documentary shortlist are women, 37 percent of directors identify as BIPOC, and five percent of directors are LGBTQ.
IDA received 365 documentary feature submissions from 67 countries, and 153 documentary shorts from 21 countries.
Up to 10 nominees in each of the feature and short documentary categories will be selected from the shortlist. Nominees will be announced November 24.
