The International Documentary Festival Amsterdam’s (IDFA) 2019 program marks “the highest percentage of female filmmakers in the event’s 31-year history: 64% of competition titles and 47% of the total program,” Variety reports.
“Reaching a fairer representation was much easier than it seemed to be,” said Orwa Nyrabia, the fest’s artistic director. “We only had to keep our goal in mind. The outstanding films that found their way to us this year was a humble reminder that we are in the presence of exceptional female filmmakers.”
Titles screening in the Feature-Length Documentary Competition include Laura Herrero Garvín’s “La Mami,” a portrait of a caretaker working in the the women’s restroom at the Barba Azul Cabaret, and Heidi Hassan and Patricia Pérez Fernández’s “In a Whisper,” which sees its filmmakers reconnecting after losing touch when they move from Cuba to Europe.
Eva Marie Rødbro’s “I Love You I Miss You I Hope I See You Before I Die” and Lucy Parker’s “Solidarity” are among the features up for the First Appearance Prize. The former tells the story of a young mother living below the poverty line and sharing a house with 10 others in Colorado Springs, and the latter is an investigation into how activists and trade unionists are blacklisted in the UK construction industry.
IDFA runs from November 20 – December 1. Check out the fest’s website for the complete lineup.
