Join Academy Award nominee Uma Thurman, Emmy Award-winning producer Christine Vachon, and other panelists for a screening, presentation and audience discussion. Presented in partnership with Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, this special event is part of NYICFF’s groundbreaking Girls’ POV Program.

IF SHE CAN SEE IT, SHE CAN BE IT! will explore why, despite the many accomplishments of female media-makers over the past 30 years, onscreen gender roles remain largely stuck in the past. Panelists will discuss their experiences and answer questions from the audience about portraying and creating unique female roles for film and television.

Panelists include:

Uma Thurman, Oscar-nominated actor (Pulp Fiction)

Christine Vachon, Award-winning film & television producer (Boys Don’t Cry, Mildred Pierce)

Debra Granik, Oscar-nominated director/screenwriter (Winter’s Bone)

Angela Tucker, Emmy-nominated writer/director/producer (Black Folk Don’t, The New Black)

Madeline DiNonno, Executive Director, Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media

Moderator: Melissa Silverstein, Founder & Editor,

Women and Hollywood; Co-founder & Artistic Director, Athena Film Festival

The event will begin with an audience survey, followed by a NYICFF “Best of Girls’ POV” short film program, an insightful presentation by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender and Media, and an interactive panel discussion and audience Q&A.
