Mary Harron’s latest tells the story of another American psycho. The Charles Manson-inspired pic hits theaters May 10, and IFC hosted a retrospective of the director to coincide with its release.
The retrospective featured 2000 Christian Bale-starrer “American Psycho,” a violence-filled satire about a murderous Wall Street investment banker, and 1996’s “I Shot Andy Warhol,” Harron’s feature debut. Based on a true story, the drama centers on Valerie Solanas, a ’60s radical best known for her attempted murder of Andy Warhol. Lili Taylor portrays her in the film
“The Notorious Bettie Page” and “The Moth Diaries” are among Harron’s other film credits. She’s directed episodes of series such as “Six Feet Under,” “Big Love,” and “The L Word.”
“Charlie Says” made its world premiere at the 2018 Venice Film Festival. The drama sees “Godless” actress Merritt Wever playing a graduate student enlisted to rehabilitate the three women who killed for Charles Manson (Matt Smith) — Leslie Van Houten (Hannah Murray), Patricia Krenwinkel (Sosie Bacon), and Susan Atkins (Marianne Rendón). Set years after the murders, the so-called Manson Girls remain committed to their cult leader and his ways of thinking. Guinevere Turner penned the script.
“With this one, I was just interested in ordinary people doing terrible things,” Harron has said of “Charlie Says.” “And I think the fascination of true crime is always: could it happen to me? It’s close to home always. This really happened.”
The sneak peek of “Charlie Says” will take place May 8. A Q&A with Harron will follow. You can find more information here.
Up next for Harron is Salvador Dali biopic “Dali Land.” Ben Kingsley will portray the surrealist artist.
