“Rust Creek,” a survival thriller directed by Jen McGowan and written by Julie Lipson, has been picked up by IFC Midnight. As Variety reports, the distribution company is planning a January 2019 theatrical release.
The feature sees British actress Hermione Corfield as a Kentucky college senior on her way to a job interview. A wrong turn leaves her stranded in the icy woods, where she is left facing both the elements and a gang of cruel fugitives. Jay Paulson (“Mad Men”), Sean O’Bryan (“Olympus Has Fallen”), and Micah Hauptman (“Everest”) round out the cast.
Behind the camera, “Rust Creek” was produced in accordance to Lunacy Productions’ mandate to support female filmmakers. The majority of key crew roles are filled by women, and it received a Women in Film LA finishing fund grant.
The film marks Corfield’s first leading role. Her previous credits include Lily James-starrer “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
Jen McGowan previously directed “Touch” and “Kelly and Cal,” which took home a SXSW Gamechanger Award. She shared her filmmaking philosophy with us in 2014: “Our stories reflect who we are,” she said. “And films are only two hours, so they are condensed, distilled versions of our realities. Sexism, racism, and homophobia exist in this world just as it does in our industry and in our stories. I believe very much that the solution to this is increased diversity in all areas of our industry. We need to see many different types of women, types of people of color, types of genders.”
