Imelda Staunton Becoming a Theatrical Leading Lady

She may have immortalized her career in film by playing Delores Umbridge in the “Harry Potter” movies, but Imelda Staunton is having an equally successful turn on the stage as of late.

As Broadway World reported, Staunton is early talks to play the much-coveted role of Martha in in Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” on the West End in London. It’s the role that Kathleen Turner played on Broadway recently, and that Elizabeth Taylor played in the 1966 film.

Staunton also recently starred in the highly acclaimed London production of “Gypsy” last year, which won four Olivier Awards, including Best Actress for Staunton, which the producers are currently trying to move to Broadway. Her other West End credits include “Sweeney Todd,” “Guys and Dolls,” and “Into the Woods.”
