This calls for a celebratory mirror rap. HBO has renewed “Insecure” for a fifth season, Variety confirms.
Co-created by and starring Issa Rae and partially based on her web series “Awkward Black Girl,” the comedy is set in South LA and tells the story of Issa (Rae) and her friends. The critically acclaimed series is currently midway through its fourth season, which sees Issa planning an elaborate block party and navigating mounting tension with her long-time BFF Molly (Yvonne Orji).
Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming, emphasized that the premium cable network is “thrilled” that the “Insecure” team “will be getting back together for a fifth season.” She added, “As we laugh and cringe with recognition, their stories make us all feel a little less alone in the world.”
Rae has received an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nods for her acting in the series. “The Hate U Give,” “Little,” and “The Photograph” are among her other credits. She’ll re-team with her director on the latter, Stella Meghie, for “American Princess,” a comedy about an American woman who finds herself drawn into a world of wealth and high society when she moves to London. Her upcoming slate also includes “The Dolls,” an HBO limited series that’s based on a true story and depicts Christmas Eve riots that erupted over Cabbage Patch dolls.
