Shira Haas is starring in another awards contender. The “Unorthodox” breakout leads “Asia,” a drama that has been named as Israel’s pick for Best International Film at the 2021 Academy Awards. Screen Daily confirmed the news.
Written and directed by Ruthy Pribar, “Asia” tells the story of a young mother (Alena Yiv) and her teenage daughter (Haas), whose relationship changes when the latter becomes seriously ill.
The film took home three awards from Tribeca Film Festival: Best Actress International Feature (Haas), Best Cinematography International Feature (Daniella Nowitz), and the Nora Ephron Prize. The latter, named for the late “Sleepless in Seattle” filmmaker, honors a female writer or director with a distinctive voice.
“Asia” also won best picture at Israel’s Ophir Awards.
Haas received an Emmy nod this year for “Unorthodox.” Maria Schrader won the Emmy in the Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special category for the Netflix drama about a young woman who flees her marriage and Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn and moves to Berlin.
Oscar nominations will be announced March 15, and the ceremony is slated for April 25. Other entries in the Best International Film race include Maria Sødahl’s “Hope,” the story of a 43-year-old woman who has three months left to live, and Melina León’s child trafficking drama “Song Without a Name.” The former is representing Norway and the latter Peru.
