Issa Rae’s latest project will help boost diverse, up-and-coming screenwriters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the “Insecure” star’s ColorCreative has signed a multi-year deal with Columbia Pictures that is part mentorship program, part studio diversity initiative. Selected participants, who will be announced this spring, will collaborate with Rae and Columbia to develop and write feature films from their own ideas.
Columbia’s vp production, Bryan Smiley, was behind the pact. He will handle production and development with ColorCreative’s vp production, Sara Rastogi, and COO, Deniese Davis.
“Working with Bryan Smiley and Columbia Pictures to further the mission ColorCreative set out to achieve four years ago in creating access for underrepresented writers, has been a dream come true,” Rae stated. “All of the projects we are working on are fresh and promising and we can’t wait to continue the work. We hope to set a precedent and inspire the industry at large to invest in undiscovered talent, original IP, and fresh stories and perspectives.”
“Issa is a force of nature, and a magnet for talented people,” added Columbia’s Sanford Panitch. “We couldn’t be more excited to join her in her mission to pave the way for fresh and authentic voices.”
Earlier this year Rae scored a best comedy actress nom at the Emmys for “Insecure,” which she co-created. The HBO comedy wrapped up its third season in September and has been renewed for a fourth. Rae has also received two Golden Globe nods for portraying main character Issa. Her upcoming projects include a limited series about the 1983 riots that broke out over Cabbage Patch Dolls and Stella Meghie’s London-set romance “American Princess.” You can catch Rae in theaters now in Black Lives Matter-inspired drama “The Hate U Give.”
