Weeks after HBO announced that it’s renewing “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” on which Issa Rae serves as exec producer, comes word that the Emmy-nominated “Insecure” co-creator, star, writer, and EP is working on a re-imagining of “Set It Off.” She’s producing the fresh take on New Line’s 1996 crime thriller “with an eye to star,” The Hollywood Reporter confirms.
Syreeta Singleton (“Black Monday”) and Nina Gloster (“Star”) are penning the script for the project.
Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Vivica A. Fox, and Kimberly Elise starred in the original “Set It Off.” The pic sees four desperate, cash-strapped friends teaming up to rob banks.
“Insecure” has been renewed by HBO for a fourth season. A premiere date has yet to be announced. Other projects on Rae’s slate include “The Dolls” and “The Photograph.” Based on a true story, the former is a limited HBO series that depicts Christmas Eve riots that erupted over Cabbage Patch dolls. The latter, a feature written and directed by Stella Meghie (“The Weekend”), is a romantic drama featuring intertwining love stories.
Rae first rose to prominence with her web series, “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl.” Her recent on-screen credits include “Little” and “The Hate U Give.”
“There was no blueprint to do this. There was no one I could look to to be like, ‘Oh, so-and-so made some videos and then had a television show, and then did movies,’” Rae has said of her career. “You kind of just do it.”
