Issa Rae’s long-gestating TV series, “Insecure,” has received a series order from HBO.
That’ll make Rae, who got her start with her two-season web series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” HBO’s only woman-of-color star.
Created by Rae and Larry Wilmore, “Insecure” will focus on the uncomfortable experiences and dating travails of two African-American women: Issa Dee (Rae), who works at an educational non-profit, and her best friend Molly (Yvonne Orji, “Love That Girl”), a corporate professional.
The cast also includes Jay Ellis, who’ll co-star as the fictional Issa’s depressed and unemployed boyfriend, and Lisa Joyce, who’ll play a co-worker of Issa’s.
Rae and Wilmore co-penned the pilot. Rae will co-executive produce, while Prentice Penny will serve as showrunner and EP.
First-time TV director Melina Matsoukas helmed the pilot.
