All those mirror raps seem to have paid off. “Rap Sh*t,” Issa Rae’s half-hour comedy about former friends who reunite to form a rap group, has received an eight-episode series order at HBO Max. Rae will write the pilot and her “Insecure” collaborator Syreeta Singleton will serve as showrunner, Variety confirms.
Originally announced in fall 2019, “Rap Sh*t” will be executive produced by Rae, via her Hoorae shingle, and Singleton. Rae’s audio content company, Raedio, will be responsible for the project’s music supervision. City Girls’ hip hop duo Yung Miami and JT will be co-exec producers.
“Rap Sh*t” is now in the casting phase, with plans to kick off production this summer.
“Insecure,” the much-loved HBO comedy about two Black women navigating love, work, and friendship in LA, will be ending with its upcoming fifth season. The show has nabbed multiple honors for its run, including Emmy nods for Best Comedy, Best Lead Actress – Comedy (Rae) , and Best Supporting Actress – Comedy (Yvonne Orji). Rae co-created the series, and Singleton has served as a writer, story editor, and script coordinator.
“Central Park” and “Black Monday” are also among Singleton’s credits.
Rae’s on-screen work includes “The Photograph,” “Little,” and “The Lovebirds.” She is an exec producer on “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” which is set to return for a second season on HBO. Her packed slate includes exec producing both a TV adaption of the hit podcast “Nice White Parents” and a doc about the history of Black television.
