J.K. Rowling’s work is headed to HBO. You may recall when the “Harry Potter” author turned to the pseudonym Robert Galbraith to write a series of crime novels. Now BBC One is turning them into a limited series, which HBO will air in the U.S. and Canada.
“Cormoran Strike,” as the series is called, includes the novels “The Cuckoo’s Calling,” “The Silkworm,” and “Career of Evil.” The stories follow a war veteran named Strike who turns private detective in London. As The Hollywood Reporter writes, “Though he’s wounded both physically and psychologically, Strike’s unique insight and his background as an Special Investigation Branch investigator prove key in solving three complex cases which have eluded the police.”
Rowling will executive produce through her banner, Brontë Film & TV, along with Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and Elizabeth Kilgarriff. Filming begins soon in London.
This is not the first time HBO has snatched up a Rowling project. Her first non-Harry Potter novel, “A Casual Vacancy,” was made into a miniseries at the network.
Though Rowling is venturing into other genres and characters, the world of “Harry Potter” is still going strong. Her sequel play, “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” is now running in London and producers are eyeing a Broadway run. Rowling also has her first screenplay project coming up. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” based on her Potter spin-off book, hits theaters on November 17. It was also recently announced that the series will be made into five separate films, so Rowling’s screenwriting days may just continue for quite a while.
