Jada Pinkett Smith is heading from the red table to the MTV Movie and TV Awards. The “Red Table Talk” host and “Girls Trip” actress will receive the Trailblazer Award at the annual event, which is set to air June 17. Variety broke the news.
Given in recognition of game-changing creators in entertainment, previous recipients of the honor include Lena Waithe, Shailene Woodley, and Emma Watson. Pinkett Smith will be presented with the award by her “Girls Trip” co-star and Groupon swamp tour organizer Tiffany Haddish.
“Gotham,” “Bad Moms,” and “Magic Mike XXL” are among Pinkett Smith’s recent acting credits. She co-hosts Facebook Watch web series “Red Table Talk” alongside her mother and daughter. The inter-generational chat show sees its hosts and guests addressing topics such as white privilege, domestic abuse, and addiction.
Pinkett Smith’s upcoming projects include “Angel Has Fallen,” the third installment in the “Olympus Has Fallen” franchise. She plays an FBI agent in the action thriller, which is slated for an August 23 release.
The “Hawthorne” alumna has been vocal in the fight for more inclusion in the industry. “I travel all around the world, and [Hollywood is still the biggest tastemaker]. We really are, and that’s just a fact,” she emphasized. “So I think that [representation is] important to show because we are setting an example.”
