Jane Campion’s “Power of the Dog,” Cannes Winner “Unclenching the Fists,” & More Added to TIFF Lineup

"Unclenching the Fists"

More films have been added to the Toronto International Film Festival’s 2021 lineup. An additional three titles will screen as Gala Presentations, two of which are directed or co-directed by women: “The Good House” and “Silent Night.” The former, from Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky, tells the story of a realtor whose life starts to unravel when she reconnects with an ex, and the latter, helmed by Camille Griffin, is a comedy that sees an extended family coming together to celebrate Christmas in the country.

Eight Special Presentations have been added, and three are directed by women. The slate includes the Canadian premiere of Jane Campion’s “The Power of the Dog,” a Western about brothers who run a Montana cattle ranch. Eva Husson’s “Mothering Sunday,” a period pic about a maid, and Nathalie Biancheri’s “Wolf,” the story of a man who believes he is a wolf trapped in a human body, are also among the titles set to screen.

TIFF also unveiled the Contemporary World Cinema and Discovery slates. The former includes Cannes winner “Unclenching the Fists,” Kira Kovalenko’s portrait of a young woman struggling to bear the weight of her familial bonds, and the latter features Haya Waseem’s feature debut, “Quickening.”

Director Patricia Cardoso and star America Ferrera are set to revisit “Real Women Have Curves” as part of TIFF’s Rewind program. The collaborators will discuss the beloved coming-of-age story, which had its international premiere at TIFF in 2002.

TIFF will take place September 8-18. Head over to Deadline to check out all of the newly announced titles. As previously announced, this year’s lineup includes offerings from Mia Hansen-Løve, Céline Sciamma, and Danis Goulet.

Award-winning documentary filmmaker, writer, singer, and activist Alanis Obomsawin has been named as the recipient of the Jeff Skoll Award in Impact Media and will be celebrated at the TIFF Tribute Awards.
