Jane Fonda to Be Honored with France’s Lumière Award

Fonda in "Book Club"

Oscar-winning actress, activist, and fitness icon Jane Fonda can add Lumière Award recipient to her stacked résumé. France’s Institut Lumière will recognize the “Grace and Frankie” star with its prestigious honorary Lumière Award at the 10th edition of its annual cinema heritage festival, ScreenDaily confirms. The fest runs from October 13-21 and Fonda will accept her award in a ceremony on October 19.

Previous recipients of Honorary Lumières include Isabelle Huppert, Catherine Deneuve, and Marion Cotillard.

In addition to screening select films from Fonda’s 50 year-plus career, the special programming will also include Susan Lacy’s “Jane Fonda In Five Acts,” a documentary about the multi-hyphenate that made its world premiere at Sundance in January.

The fest’s complete lineup won’t be announced until September, but other events include a retrospective celebrating late UK screenwriter and filmmaker Muriel Box “and her work capturing England in the 1950s, as part of the institute’s ongoing research into the role of women in cinema entitled ‘A Permanent History of Women Filmmakers,'” according to ScreenDaily.

Fonda can currently be seen on the big screen in “Book Club,” a comedy about a group of female friends whose lives are changed when they read “Fifty Shades of Grey.” Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen co-star.

“Grace and Frankie’s” fourth season dropped on Netflix back in January. A fifth season has been confirmed with a premiere date TBA. Fonda and co-star Lily Tomlin made headlines in 2015 when they revealed that they were making the same amount as the actors playing supporting roles on their sitcom.

“The studios are run by men and they have the bottom line to meet and they give jobs to people like them,” Fonda said at a Sundance event that same year. “It’s a matter of gender, not that we don’t have the experience.”

Fonda won an Oscar in 1972 for “Klute.” She’s also received nods for “The Morning After,” “On Golden Pond,” “The China Syndrome,” “Coming Home,” “Julia,” and “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?”
