Jane Fonda Will Receive AFI Lifetime Achievement Award

Jane Fonda will be the 42nd recipient of the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor for a career in film.

Fonda has appeared in over 40 movies since her debut in 1960’s Tall Story. Since then, Fonda has racked up memorable roles in films like Barbarella, They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, Nine to Five and On Golden Pond — which co-starred her father, Henry Fonda. He received the AFI Lifetime Achievement Award in 1978, making them the first father/daughter pair to both receive the award.

Fonda’s been nominated for 7 Academy Awards and had won twice for her roles in Klute and Coming Home. Most recently, she has be seen on HBO’s Newsroom and in Lee Daniels’ The Butler. And despite controversy, Fonda has always been an outspoken political presence throughout her career — supporting the Civil Rights Movement, speaking out against Vietnam and advocating for women’s rights amongst other issues.

Sir Howard Stringer, Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees, commented on Fonda receiving the award.

Jane Fonda is American film royalty. A bright light first introduced to the world as the daughter of Henry Fonda, the world watched as she found her own
voice and forged her own path as an actor and a cultural icon. Today she stands tall among the giants of American film, and it is AFI’s honor to present
Jane Fonda with its 42nd Life Achievement Award.

Fonda will receive the award on June 5th, 2014 in Los Angeles. The event will be taped and air later that month on TNT.
