Friends, we could be getting more Jane Gloriana Villanueva — or at least more of her writing. According to Variety, a spinoff of “Jane the Virgin” is in the works at The CW. Not many plot details are available yet, but the project will reportedly be an anthology series based on Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) romance novels. Each season would portray the events of one novel, and Rodriguez is “potentially onboard to narrate.”
“Jane the Virgin” writer and co-executive producer Valentina Garza will pen and EP the spinoff. “Jane the Virgin” creator Jennie Snyder Urman and Rodriguez are also among the exec producers.
A self-aware telenovela, the events of “Jane the Virgin” kick off when the titular character, who has never had sex, is mistakenly artificially inseminated. The series, which will end after its upcoming fifth season, had explores themes of sexuality, religion, family, and immigration during its run. “Jane” earned Rodriguez a Golden Globe, the first time a CW star had ever received the honor.
Garza has worked on “Jane the Virgin” since Season 3. “The Simpsons” “Bordertown,” and “George Lopez” are among her other writing and producing credits.
You can catch Rodriguez next in Catherine Hardwicke’s crime thriller “Miss Bala,” out February 1, and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s Netflix rom-com “Someone Great,” expected sometime next year. Her more recent credits include “Annihilation,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” and “Big Mouth.”
