Janelle Monáe is heading to the small screen. After strong supporting turns in “Hidden Figures” and “Moonlight” the eight-time Grammy nominee is taking on the lead in Season 2 of “Homecoming.” Julia Roberts starred in the first season of the Amazon Studios anthology series, and remains an exec producer on the psychological thriller.
“Monáe’s character is described as a tenacious woman who finds herself floating in a canoe, with no memory of how she got there or who she is,” Variety reports.
Monáe co-stars in “Harriet,” Kasi Lemmons’ upcoming biopic of Harriet Tubman. A trailer just dropped for the Cynthia Erivo-starrer, which is set to bow November 1. The multi-hyphenate’s other upcoming projects include Julie Taymor’s tribute to Gloria Steinem, “The Glorias: A Life on the Road,” and voicing a character in “Lady and the Tramp,” a CGI and live-action re-imagining of the Disney animated pic.
Emma Westenberg, the director behind Monáe’s vulva-themed music video for “Pynk,” is set to make her studio debut with “Buffalo Flats.” The MGM title is set amidst the world of NYC underground pop-up clubs and centers on a former rap prodigy.
