January 2016 Film Preview

Jane Got A Gun

Dark and cold January creeps in on us with a number of equally dark tales of young women finding themselves in dangerous situations. In "The Forest," Natalie Dormer of "Game of Thrones" and "The Hunger Games" stars as a young woman looking for her twin sister in he legendary Aokigahara Forest in Japan. She’s warned to "stay on the path" (always stay on the path, ladies) — but we suspect she won’t listen. In "The 5th Wave," Chloe Grace Moretz plays a young woman trying to save her younger brother while on the run from alien attacks. And in "The Boy," an nanny (Lauren Cohan) is babysitting a life-sized doll that may or may not be alive.
Natalie Portman is battling more earthly but still gruesome enemies — a gang out to kill her husband and child — in the titular role of the the feminist Western "Jane Got A Gun." As a producer, Portman has been battling backstage drama and postponements for years. We’re excited that the film is finally here.
If you’re looking for something cozier, we recommend "Kung Fu Panda 3," co-directed by Jennifer Yuh, whose "Kung Fu Panda 2" became one of the highest-grossing film directed by a woman.

All descriptions are from press releases, unless stated otherwise.
