Jenji Kohan Sells Salem Pilot to HBO

“Orange is the New Black” creator Jenji Kohan has created another show about female victims, scapegoats, and troublemakers.

HBO has given a pilot order to “New World,” a drama set in 17th-century Salem that will explore the repression, persecution, and mass hysteria that led to the infamous witch trials in the British colony. The first episode will be written by Kohan, Bruce Miller, and Tracy Miller.

Should it go to series, “New World” will join several other coven-themed shows currently on the air: WGN America’s Salem,” just renewed for a second season; the third season of FX’s “American Horror Story,” and Lifetime’s now-canceled “Witches of East End.”

Gus Van Sant will executive produce the series and direct the “New World” pilot.
