Lena Dunham’s next TV project has found its star. Entertainment Weekly confirms that Jennifer Garner will lead “Camping,” a comedy about an outdoorsy weekend gone awry. Dunham is writing and will exec produce with frequent collaborator Jenni Konner.
Garner will star as the tightly-wound Kathryn, who plans a camping trip to celebrate her husband’s 45th birthday. Per the series description, “When the camping trip gathers Kathryn’s meek sister, holier than thou ex-best friend, and a free-spirited Tagalong in one place, it becomes a weekend of tested marriages and woman on woman crime that won’t soon be forgotten. Plus, bears.”
“Camping” is based on Julia Davis’ UK series of the same name.
The role of Kathryn is “messy, tough, and provocative, and really, really fun. We love Jennifer’s restraint and comedic timing, and we can’t wait for the warmth and intelligence she’ll bring to our central character,” Dunham and Konner said. “It’s truly a dream to have her first on our call sheet. Now we just have to write her some stunts.”
“Girls,” Dunham and Konner’s seminal series about millennial women trying to get it together in New York, ended in 2017 after six seasons. The duo recently produced the short romance “Tokyo Project” for HBO. Dunham and Konner previously produced docs “It’s Me, Hilary: The Man Who Drew Eloise” and “Suited” for the cabler. They’re also linked to the American remake of Maren Ade’s German hit “Toni Erdmann.”
Garner starred as kickass spy Sydney Bristow on “Alias” from 2001 to 2006. She won a Golden Globe for the role in 2002. Her film credits include “Juno,” “Miracles from Heaven,” and “Dallas Buyers Club.” Among her upcoming projects are LGBT coming-of-age film “Love, Simon” and revenge thriller “Peppermint.”
